Started in 2001, the .NAME top-level domain is the only one intended for personal sites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other titles people are known by. At first, solely 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you desired to obtain john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already taken third-level domains remained online.
